Introduction

You probably picture tropical rainforest as a jungle, where it stays warm all year. There are too many animals to count and the huge numbers of trees keep their leaves year-round. Many of these forests get so much rain that there isn't even much of a dry season – more like a rainy season and a rainier season.

Climate

Hot and wet describes the tropical rainforest climate. The average daily temperature is around 28ºC with an exception of cool nights (> 22ºC). Participation varies widely from a low of about 250cm/year to about 450 cm/year. The humidity of a tropical rainforest is usually 85%. There are no seasons in the rainforest, and the weather is basically the same thing everyday. It's hot, humid and rainy. It seems as if it's always summer because of this. To summarize:

  • Small annual temperature range (2 - 4ºC).
  • Regular insolation, result of location near equator.
  • Daily temperature range in excess of annual range (8 - 10 degrees), with daytime temperatures up to 32ºC.
  • High levels of convectional rainfall, often with a minimum in July/August/September.
  • Extremely high humidity levels.
  • Light winds.
  • Quick evapotranspiration.
  • Year long growing season (but not all plants in the forest grow all year).
