Ocean Fishes

Some estimates report the world’s oceans are home to 20,000 species of fish. Ocean fishes come in all shapes, sizes, colors and live in drastically different depths and temperatures. Despite this diversity, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported in 2016 that 89.5% of fish stocks are fully fished or overfished.

Marine Mammals

Dolphins, whales, sea otters and other marine mammals capture the imagination and demand the affections of people around the world. Many of these marine animals adhere to complex social systems and exhibit remarkable intelligence.

Sharks and Rays

Sharks have played a vital role in maintaining healthy oceans for hundreds of millions of years as a top predator. More than 450 species of sharks cruise the world’s oceans, ranging in size from 8 inches to a whopping 40 feet long. But today, nearly one in four sharks and their relatives are threatened with extinction. A major cause is the demand for shark fins. Every year, fins from as many as 73 million sharks end up in the global fin trade.

Introduction

This water biome is the largest biome in the world, as it includes the five major oceans that cover 70% of the Earth. Marine water has high levels of salt, so animals and plants living here have adaptations that help them get rid of salt or take on water.

Habitats: Oceans

Nutrient Limitation in Aquatic Ecosystems

Oceans are poor in nutrients compared to land. In the ocean and other bodies of saltwater, nitrogen is commonly the limiting nutrients. The limiting nutrient in streams, lakes, and bodies of freshwater, on the other hand, is typically phosphorus. In addition, heavy rains can also supply an aquatic ecosystem with a large input of a limiting nutrient. This phenomenon can lead to algal bloom, which is the dramatic increase in the amount of algae and other primary producers. This may interrupt the ecosystem as the amount of producers is significantly and astonishingly larger than the amount of consumers.

Sea Turtles and Reptiles

Sea turtles have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, but all seven species in the world face potential extinction. Oceana runs proven campaigns to protect sea turtles from death as bycatch, habitat degradation and other issues.

Seabirds

Oceans aren’t just for fish. Seabirds depend on healthy oceans for food and much more. From the emperor penguin to the blue-footed booby to the brown pelican, seabirds come in all shapes and sizes (some can’t even fly) and play a vital role in ocean ecosystems.
